Most commonly ankle sprains occur when people walk or run on uneven ground and the foot turns inward, stretching the ligaments of the ankle.
The ankle is swollen and walking is painful.
Mild sprains are treated with RICE. Rest. Ice. Compression with a tensor bandage. Elevation of the leg.
Severe sprains are characterized by inability to weight bear, an unstable joint , or severe swelling. These require medical attention to rule out fracture.
